Paul Hagman, President

With a strong interest in audio and construction, I started Dimensional in 1973 as a department of my father's company, Riverside Millwork. Dimensional Sound Center was a retail audio store featuring quality products by the leading manufacturers, a service department, and custom installations. I was 23 at the time and I found the rapidly-changing audio market fascinating and exciting.
In 1975 Dimensional was incorporated as an independent company. In 1977 we relocated the Mount Vernon store to a location that featured two audio demo rooms and a large sales floor shown at right. Our service department was just inside the front door, managed by Jeff Louden who is still a key member of our technical staff.

From Retail to Custom Manufacturing
Eager to sell my own designs, we rented space in an old warehouse and set up a shop to manufacture our own line of speakers and component stereo cabinets. This was the beginning of our move from a retailer to the contracting market.
To help market our line of speakers and cabinets, we participated in the Home Shows held at the King Dome. Left, Steve Olszewsk, our current VP of Sales, is working a show. To the right is Paul Morey with a PA system using custom speakers and equipment racks built by Dimensional. Paul is still on our technical staff and specializes in custom fabrication and engineered speaker installation.

Break-up of "The Telephone Company" Opens Up New Opportunities
It is hard to believe now, but there was a day when you could not own your telephone. "The Telephone Company" was the only source of supply for telephone equipment and they said you had to rent it. Once the Federal Government broke up the telephone monopoly the market began to change rapidly. The old big button, big wire, mechanical key systems were on the way out, and the new feature rich electronic systems were on the way in. It wasnt hard to sell hands-free voice intercom over the old buzzer system. Selling electronic boxes based on features was what we had been doing for years. We found the new huge telecommunications market irresistible and by 1985 it was clear that the future of Dimensional was in contracting. We changed our name to Dimensional Communications and our focus to contracting, installation, and service.
